ABOUT the TINNITUS PRACTITIONERS ASSOCIATION (TPA)

The Tinnitus Practitioners Association is a nationwide professional health organization dedicated to eliminating tinnitus (perception of sound in the absence of external sound) and hyperacusis (abnormal sound sensitivity) as a health problem by preventing tinnitus and hyperacusis, improving lives, and diminishing suffering from tinnitus and hyperacusis, through research, education, advocacy, and practice.

WHAT IS TINNITIS?

Tinnitus is not a disease; it is a common auditory condition.  It can be a constant ringing, hissing, roaring, whistling, or any other distressing sound in your ears or head.  Tinnitus is real, not imaginary.

If you can relate to this, you are not alone.  About 50 million Americans, or 15% of the population, experience tinnitus to the extent that it significantly affects their lives. It  interferes with sleep, work or social interaction and Two million Americans are disabled from it.  Patients often report feeling anxious with no escape from this "unending noise."

Currently there is no "cure" for tinnitus.Research indicates that individualized treatment administered by a tinnitus specialist can help you to reduce the perception of tinnitus and to manage the negative effects that it often causes.

WHY SEE A TINNITUS PRACTITIONER'S ASSOCIATION  AUDIOLOGIST

The Tinnitus Practitioners Association (TPA) awards the Certificate of Competency in Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Care to audiologists who have demonstrated exceptional knowledge and skill in the evaluation and management of the tinnitus and hyperacusis patient.

You can be assured that these professionals, with master or doctorate levels degrees in Audiology, have the qualifications, expertise and experience to identify factors which contribute to the tinnitus, and implement an individually developed treatment plan. Your audiologist will create and implement a plan specifically for you and your individual need.  Your audiologist will also identify any medical hearing disorders.
